John Stephen Monks (born 5 August 1945) is a Labour Party member of the House of Lords and a former trade unionist leader. Monks served from 1993 until 2003 as the General Secretary of the British Trade Union Congress and he also served as the General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) in Brussels from 2003 until 2011. In 2010 Monks having been made a Life peer and a member of the House of Lords.

In this podcast, Peter Scherrer talks with John Monks and traces his career from a trade unionist to a member of the House of Lords. Topics include the most important milestones in Monks’ biography, the EU crisis, the role of trade unions and their relations with the EU, the climate crisis and the danger of far-right parties.
