On December 19th, I had the privilege of attending the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought ceremony at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. It was a humbling moment to witness the recognition of those who dedicate their lives to defending human rights and democracy-values at the core of Europe’s identity.
On behalf of Circle of Sustainable Europe (CoSE) and being specialized in Human Rights Advocacy, I was proud to represent the Erasmus+ Transnational D.R.E.A.M. LAND project, which champions youth participation in political literacy and European decision-making processes.
The D.R.E.A.M. LAND initiative focuses on empowering young Europeans to understand and engage with EU democracy and institutions, develop skills for meaningful contributions to decision-making processes, and promote inclusion and diversity, ensuring no voice is left unheard.
The Sakharov Prize reminds us of the immense power of standing up for democracy and justice. It reinforces the need to equip young people with tools, platforms, and opportunities to make their voices heard-whether through Erasmus+ projects, transnational dialogues, or civic engagement initiatives.
Meeting president Elect of Venezuela and discussing about his engagement as a civil society activist is really inspiring “I am a civil servant, I am not a political leader“ he says. Edmundo González stands for the European values of democracy, freedom and human rights. His fight together with Maria Corina Machado against Maduro’s terrorist regime is an inspiration to us all. Anna Corina, daughter of political activist Maria Corina said that “in this misery, we have lived, we have found unity“ which shows the reconciliation and the resiliance that the Venezuelian people showed against adversity.
As for women wage peace and women of the sun, I had the privilege to meet them before in Marrakesh Forum in 2023 before October 7th attacks and I was moved by their solidarity, sisterhood and strength to promote peace and dialogue between women and young people in Israel and Palestine and put an end to the suffering of civilians. After October 7th attacks, the situation became more complicated but these brave women continued in believing in peace and coexistence between both sides. I had the honour to speak to the director in Europe who was impressed by the meeting with civil society organizations in Europe and young people who are engaged in peace and want to contribute to the dialogue in the region for a better future.
I am grateful for the invitation by Ramon Rahangmetan, Circle of Sustainable Europe (CoSE) and the European Parliament for providing platforms like these to inspire and enable the next generation of change-makers. Together, we continue to dream, advocate, and act for a Europe rooted in freedom, equality, and sustainability.
